AANR to Attend Lawmakers’ Conference in Los Angeles in August, 2018 The American Association for Nude Recreation and AANR West region volunteers will greet more than 1,200 state lawmakers, plus nearly 900 legislative staff in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Convention Center between July 31 and August 2, 2018.  In all, the National Conference of State Legislatures is expected to draw over 5,200 from businesses, official agencies, trade unions, and even international lawmakers including every Canadian province. One thing especially promising this year: AANR’s excellent booth position on the trade show floor where attendees are sure to see us.  The booth is a corner space located directly along the aisle that visitors must walk to attend daily sessions and the keynote address.  By consistently exhibiting at NCSL year after year, AANR has accumulated sufficient show “seniority” to give it high priority in booth selection. This paid off significantly in our 2018 placement.  AANR members can be proud that their Association has a place among the most prominent businesses and organizations with a coveted space along this aisle.  As it has for twenty-five years, the AANR will stock the booth with literature about family nudism and nude recreation and distribute thousands of its trademark lapel pins.  Volunteers who serve as region officials and resort owners in California have agreed to lend a hand as a greater than average number of legislators from the Golden State are expected. Among the most common questions: where nudist clubs and beaches are located within their state and province, why we do what we do, and our opinions on legislation that could affect nudist rights.

AANR-West Booth at LA Travel Show Draws an Enthusiastic Crowd
                                                                                                                      – by Gary Mussell

The Western Region of the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR-West) once again sponsored an informational booth at the LA Travel and Adventure Show on
February 24-25. Our purpose was to talk to those attendees interested in exploring the places and opportunities for nude recreation around the western U.S. We saw much bigger crowds at the booth than last year when it rained. The show promoters say the Travel Show usually draws about 40,000 visitors each of the two days and, from our observations of the crowded aisles, the number of visitors was probably higher than that.
As in years past we had a variety of volunteers representing nearby clubs in the booth. One of the teenage daughters of a member ran the prize wheel and by being there, she articulated the family-friendly image of social naturism–that it’s not just for adults. The result was a line of smiling faces waiting to spin the wheel to win a prize!
We gave out several hundred brochures and handouts from virtually all the clubs and resorts in the west. The most popular prize wheel giveaways were the keyring flashlights and the lip balm. Most popular with the kids were the beach balls. We also gave away “Nudist and I Vote” buttons, but only to people who promised to wear them the rest of the day around the exhibit hall. And they did!
We collected 145 names and emails from people who signed up for the raffle prizes provided by the Clothing-Optional Home Network. They gave away two-night stays at three of their B&B’s – Arroyo Del Sol in Altadena, Lagoon Del Sol in Phoenix, and Alpenglow in Oregon. Because it was made clear that this was a clothing-optional prize, those who signed up are obvious candidates for further contact. This list is shared with all the clubs who sent volunteers to staff the booth.
The Travel Show was held at the LA Convention Center. There were just over 500 booths and workshops, featuring different travel destinations from around our beautiful nation and the world, plus various travel products. Some of the adventures that were featured included camel rides and a scuba diving pool. Our booth was strategically located on the intersection of two main aisles, so we got maximum foot-traffic exposure.
In mid-March, we staffed a similar booth at the California Parks and Recreation Show. This two-day event was a little different than the LA show in that the attendees were all employees of various state, county, and city parks around California. We got to talk to these visitors about the traditional nude recreational areas at nearby beaches, hot springs, and hiking trails. Many expressed an interest in further information, so we were able to gather a list of contacts here also. Well worth the effort!
To those of you in other regions of the country, we recommend your club (or group of clubs) come together at similar shows in your area. The expense is worth the positive public relations, and if you raffle a nice prize you can also gather a list of names for follow-up.

AANR Meet Lawmakers for 2017 NCSL in Boston, the “Port That Launched Independence”   Boston – August 2017, as nudists gathered for convention at Oaklake Trails to celebrate independence from clothes, a separate team represented AANR and its regions while staffing a booth at the annual National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). The Conference drew state house members, senators, and governors from most US states.  International delegations from all Canadian provinces, Mexico, and as far as Germany and Africa also attend to share “best practices” and ideas for drafting better law and policy. Strong Crowd Expected.  Boston, Massachusetts was a perfect location for the conference.  For starters, it was the launching point for the war of independence from Great Britain.  Boston’s strong history, which can be experienced in part by walking the city’s famed red brick “freedom trail,” as well as a cooler climate with harbor breezes, helped drive larger than average attendance, setting a record among NCSL’s in recent years. Collectible Pin Promotes AANR.  For nearly twenty five years your Association has staffed booths wherever NCSL convenes.  For twenty two of those years AANR has distributed pins with the name, logo---and the Association’s www.aanr.com web address.  The pins have become a tradition that visitors seek out.  By changing the design each year, AANR enhances their value as keepsakes, even though their cost keeps the giveaways budget-friendly and beneath thresholds for gifts that must be reported under lobbying disclosure laws. The 2017 pin proved to be a crowd pleaser and drew significant numbers of lawmakers to AANR’s booth.  It celebrates Boston’s history and place as host city.  The clever use of lighthouse by the pin’s design team is a convenient metaphor for explaining that, like a lighthouse, AANR’s role is to provide guidance and protection to our way of life and leisure.  Thanks to the 2017 design, attendees tended to wear it publicly on their conference badges and to keep it there throughout the week.  This gave AANR incredible publicity and started a lot of conversations! When lawmakers, their staff, or even other trade show exhibitors stop by to claim their pin, they also receive an important message from us about why our members enjoy nude recreation and an invitation to experience independence from everyday life in garments. AANR will present in 2018 at the NCSL in Los Angeles, California.
