Ilsley Visits Fern Hills Club

This week, Ilsley travels to Bloomington, Indiana, to visit with members of Fern Hills Club. For over five decades, Fern Hills has been an idyllic retreat for its members and guests. The club is situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by a 75-acre hardwood forest. The miles of forest trails provide peaceful solitude for hikers and thrilling adventures for members with golf carts. There is a recreation area that offers a variety of sports. Adjacent to the sunning lawn is a unique circular bathing pool, which allows a refreshing reprieve from an afternoon in the warm sunshine. RV parking and camp sites are available. Picnic tables and grills are available in the tenting areas. Visit Fern Hills to get away from it all and recharge in a peaceful setting.

The Ilsley is a traveling trophy commissioned to commemorate AANR's 75th Anniversary as the credible voice of reason for nude recreation in North America. Ilsley is traveling to nearly 40 AANR clubs and resorts across the U.S. and Canada. Throughout his tour, special themed events and celebrations are planned at host clubs along the way.

The award is named for the late Rev. Ilsley Boone, the founder and first Executive Director of AANR's predecessor, the American Sunbathing Association. Boone is perhaps best remembered as the flamboyant clergyman who served as plaintiff in the 1958 case of Sunshine Book Co. v. Summerfield. That case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court and established, once and for all, First Amendment protection for nudist publications.

Ilsley ends his tour in August 2006 at the Association's 75th Anniversary Convention at Deanza Springs Resort outside San Diego, California.

You can track Ilsley's weekly progress on his year-long tour right here on the AANR website.

The Naked Guy

The Miami Herald reports that Andrew Martinez, the former college student at the University of California, Berkeley, known as the "Naked Guy," has died at the age of 33. Martinez is best known for his nude strolls throughout the campus and attending his classes in the buff in the early 1980s.

In 1992, Martinez organized a "Nude-In" at Berkeley to bring attention to the right of free expression. After the protest, he appeared on numerous TV talk shows, but was expelled the following year. His actions prompted the city to adopt a strict anti-nudity ordinance as a result. Read more at Naked Guy.

Creator of Coppertone Ad Dies

Another footnote in nudist history, Joyce Ballantyne, has died at the age of 88 in Ocala, Florida, according to Time magazine. Ballantyne is the creator of the Coppertone suntan lotion ad that featured a young girl whose bathing suit is being pulled down by her dog, revealing tan lines with the slogan "Don't be a paleface," bringing nudity into the mainstream.

Ballantyne, an illustrator who also created campaigns for Pampers and Coca-Cola and painted pin-up girls, used her then-three-year-old daughter as a model for the famous ad.

Your Ultimate Vacation Awaits

The latest AANR Governemnt Affairs Challenge is one you'll definitely want to take. One lucky couple will receive a prize package for the first-ever nude cruise to Alaska, considered by many travelers to be the ultimate destination. The weeklong "Fire and Ice" tour will depart Seattle on July 20, 2007, aboard the Amsterdam, a five-star Holland America cruise ship that holds up to 1,380 passengers.

Bare Necessities Tour & Travel, the Texas travel agency that began hosting clothing-optional cruises in the late 1980s, has once again donated a cabin to benefit AANR's government affairs program, which lobbies on behalf of nude recreation, defending it from those trying to pass anti-nudity legislation. For each $5 donated to the government affairs challenge, entrants will receive one chance to win.

Enter today to win this vacation to remember while supporting the advocacy of AANR';s government affairs program. But hurry. Entries must be received by October 16, 2006. The drawing will be held October 23, 2006 in the AANR office.
